Everyone’s fishing in the same pond

When it comes to attracting Self-employed Delivery Drivers, DPD, Evri, Amazon, and Yodel were all competing to attract the same people. And, with everyone using similar tactics, Yodel realised it was time to up their game and create a dedicated microsite that would be simple, intuitive and act as a real career destination.

Yodel wanted their visitors to feel special

Previously, Yodel had pretty confusing driver-specific pages on their main site. With our help, they wanted to create a new bespoke site specifically for drivers that:

  • contained immediate and easy to understand messaging
  • showcased engaging and informative video content
  • enabled people to find a role that was right for them
  • had clear navigation and a more intuitive route
  • linked to their main careers site and have a similar look and feel.

We asked for direction from our audience

Before we began, we spoke with Yodel drivers to discover what’s important to them when looking for a job. We learnt they wanted to clearly understand what Yodel offered – from different courier options and earning potential to incentives and career pathways. They wanted simple information delivered quickly. This knowledge shaped a site that was perfectly tailored to them and put applicants in the driving seat from the first click.

Guided by them, we created a site with:

  • a no-nonsense URL: yodeldriver.co.uk
  • three clearly signposted Self-Employed Delivery Driver options
  • ‘day-in-the-life’ video content
  • simple, clear navigation and prominent Apply buttons
  • mobile friendly content
  • infographics to support accessibility.

We also simplified their job opportunities

We replaced their confusing, overwhelming system of advertising thousands of duplicate driving ads all with different locations. Before, visitors had to trawl through pages and pages of repeated ads. We stripped it back to three simplified job pages for each opportunity. Now Yodel match candidates to the best location for them.

We took a fresh direction with the design too

  • It’s bold, modern, and highly engaging. Circular images and video lock ups move things forward from the previous main career site’s outdated boxy design.
  • Clear navigation, a clean layout and increased user interactivity simplifies the candidate journey.
  • Content including authentic people videos, animations and blogs improve engagement and offer insights into life here.
  • Icons and graphics help with language barriers.
  • Carousel functionality invites visitors to engage easily.

Our clever ‘decision tool’ stepped things up a gear

Yodel drivers told us that when they’re looking for a driving job, they didn’t know what type would suit them best. Now, instead of listing a job title that people don’t fully understand, our ‘decision tool’ asks questions to direct candidates to their perfect driving opportunity. So, when drivers clicked Apply, they know all about what the opportunity entails.

We influenced Yodel’s main site too

The insight that had gone into the microsite’s fresh circular design style, clear navigation and smoother UX was such a success that Yodel wanted to reflect it across their main careers site too. So, by creating a driver-specific site, we’d opened up the opportunity for other Yodel roles to shine.

And we’ve certainly delivered

The most compelling statistic is that 2,000 Self-Employed Couriers were hired during Peak season in 2023, and all applied directly through the new microsite. When we compare the microsite’s Google Analytics stats to the previous driver pages on their main site, we’ve:

  • reduced bounce rates by 47.3%
  • increased audience engagement by 38%
  • increased Apply Click conversions by 296%
  • improved the candidate journey fourfold.
